Medical biomaterials are not only used in diagnosis but can also be used in treatments. The combination of tissue samples from a variety of parts of the body is sometimes referred to as tissues of birth. However, doctors are still in the process of determining which tissue samples are suitable for transplant.
Bioprinting refers to the practice of creating an image of a patient’s cells before transplant, printing that image onto a imprinter, and then “printing” that image onto the recipient’s own cells. This method may be performed using autologous, matching, and/or donor cells.
There are three types of medical biomaterials used for transplant. They are dermal, soft, and hard.
Dermal tissues include: the epidermis, dermis, stroma, and subcutaneous tissue. They are sometimes referred to as the external skin of the body. Dermal tissues are the most common type of tissue used for transplant.
A soft tissue transplant is usually done when the patient has a compromised immune system. Another reason a soft tissue transplant may be performed is when the recipient’s body does not have enough cells to transplant to.
A hard tissue transplant is when the patient’s body is much less healthy than a soft tissue transplant would suggest. Hard tissue transplants are typically used for patients who have a weakened or damaged liver, heart, kidneys, and/or bones.
When a patient’s immune system is not strong enough to withstand a soft tissue transplant, the hard tissue transplant is sometimes the only choice. Patients who require a hard tissue transplant may also require other transplantation procedures, such as bone marrow or stem cell transplants.
These biomaterials and surgical procedures are in development, however, they have not yet been approved by the FDA. They are used in clinics all over the world.
Medical biomaterials used in treatment of diseases are called therapeutic biomaterials. The term is short for “tissue therapies.”
TBI (traumatic brain injury) biomaterials are often used in TBI, such as with cadaveric imprinted tissue. Bioprinted tissue is being used in the treatment of multiple sclerosis as well.
Medical biomaterials help us cure illnesses and bring relief to our loved ones who suffer from the condition. Bioprinted tissue is the future of medicine.
